From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?AHRC_ICT_Methods_Network?= <methnet@KCL.AC.UK>

Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2006 16:43:36 +0000

The AHRC ICT Methods Network is keen to receive proposals for activities
which fall within the Methods Network remit to support and promote advanced
ICT methods in research in the arts and humanities. Don’t miss the 31
December deadline!

The AHRC ICT Methods Network invites the arts and humanities Higher
Education community in the UK to submit proposals for Methods Network
activities. Activities may include workshops, seminars, focused workgroups,
postgraduate training events and publications.

The Methods Network is keen to support both single and cross-disciplinary
proposals and those that encourage new collaborative frameworks between
technical specialists and arts and humanities scholars. The primary emphasis
is on the use and reuse of digital resources.

Proposals for hybrid activities such as workshop/seminar/workgroup
combinations are also welcomed, as are proposals for any other activity
which falls within the Methods Network remit to support and promote the uses
of advanced ICT methods in academic research.

Funding of up to £5000 is available for workshops and hybrid activities.
Workshops provide training in advanced ICT methods for community members
within academic institutions. They engage with issues such as: formal
methods in analysis of source data and the creation of technical models;
working with multiple technologies; and other matters of vital practical
interest to the community.

Funding of up to £2000 is available for seminars. These may concentrate on
highly-defined topics of interest and also problem areas within the
community or may have a more general focus.

For information on eligibility and how to apply for funding see the Methods
Network website (www.methodsnetwork.ac.uk).

For further information about submitting a proposal contact Hazel Gardiner
(hazel.gardiner@kcl.ac.uk).

Forthcoming Methods Network-Funded Activities

We welcome applications from individuals who would like to attend Methods
Network workshops and seminars, but must emphasise that registration is
essential for these activities. Participants are also expected to make an
active contribution to the activity. Occasionally a Methods Network event
will be by invitation only, but all resulting materials, including (where
appropriate) podcasts, wikis, training workbooks, reports and publications
will be made freely available to the community via the Methods Network
website. The registration form is available on the Methods Network website.
 All enquiries about registration for the Methods Network activities listed
below should be sent by email to methnet@kcl.ac.uk. For further information
about the following activities see the Methods Network website.

Copy - Digitise - Restore? Strategies for the conservation of video
Dusseldorf, NRW-Forum
7-8 December 2006

Symposium of the el_media expert group of the Fachgruppe Moderne Kunst
Kulturgut der Moderne im Verband der Restauratoren (VDR)

Dear members and colleagues,

We would like to invite you to our Symposium Copy-Digitise-Restore?
Strategies for the conservation of video, which will take place on the 7th
and 8th of December in D=FCsseldorf, at the NRW-Forum (imai-inter media art
institute).

The preservation and conservation of video is no longer and not only one of
the main concerns of broadcasting and distributing companies, but it is also
of increased relevance for artists, curators and conservators.
Preserving a video artwork according to the artistic intent is very
challenging. How can reasonable solutions be found? The complexity of
conserving a video installation is posing questions regarding the
registration of all data needed to preserve an artwork in its entirety and
it is dependent on all its components.

Therefore, the program covers subjects like long-term preservation and use
of hardware, the conservation and restoration of videotapes and will also
include discussions about the ethics of digital restoration in moving
images.

The invited speakers are professionals from Germany, Netherlands,
Switzerland and the Unites States who have strived to find new approaches to
the problems in this field, and successfully found them on a practical
level. These different approaches to fundamental ethical questions,
possibilities of the identification of deterioration and restoration of
videotapes, as well as to various archiving, documenting and restoration
practices shall be presented and discussed.

In attachment you will find the program and registration form.
Simultaneous translation as well as refreshments will be provided

We are looking forward to meeting you in Dusseldorf

STILLNESS: 2007 Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth

The Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth (BEAP) is Australia's pre-eminent festival dedicated to showcasing innovative works of art in the areas of new media, electronic screen, sound and interactive media and is the largest and most visionary electronic arts event in the region.

Through a broad program of exhibitions, conferences and public talks, BEAP provides a focus for discussion and exploration of the emergent aesthetic, social and technological implications that surround the electronic arts, in all its possible forms, whether visual, audio, interactive, temporal, experiential, digital, 'bio' or 'nano'.

The Computers in Art and Design Education (CADE) conference is a major international event for those interested in the exploration of ideas at the intersection of pedagogy, arts, design, science, and technology. The 2007 conference will provide a focus for shared learning, dialogue and interaction that directly informs professional methodologies and practice.

In 2007 CADE partners with the Biennale for its first conference outside Europe, creating a new focus for exploring the latest research and practice within creative arts education at the point where the 'digital' is both a challenge and a strength.

Perth, the capital of the state of Western Australia, has a distinct creative community that celebrates the uniqueness ofWestern Australia's stunning bio-diverse environment and combines Indigenous, European and Southeast Asian cultures.

Internationally recognised for its commitment to research in bio and electronic arts in tertiary education, Perth welcomes delegates to explore and reflect on global perspectives from a pivotal point within the Asia-Pacific region.

==============
Conference theme
==============

We invite educators, theorists and creative arts practitioners to meet in Perth, Australia, to explore the paradox of "Stillness."

"Stillness" is the theme for the 2007 Biennale. The concept of "stillness" will become an anchor for events in the ceaseless flows of data and provide a reflective moment for new ideas to emerge and interact, explode or coalesce, blossom or fade.

BEAP will be supporting and encouraging a community of artists to explore:
        *       Stillness as Sound
        *       Stillness as Bio
        *       Stillness as Data
        *       Stillness as Duration

CADE will challenge you to confront these conceptual issues.

===========
Call for papers
===========
We invite contributions for paper presentations, posters and panel discussions that address the conference theme of "stillness." Papers should provide theoretical understanding, analysis and documentation of creative arts and digital technologies and related contexts for educational development.

The term creative arts includes: new media, multimedia, web design, interactive arts, computer games and mixed media performance and traditional disciplines (such as fine arts, sculpture, photography, printmaking, fashion and textiles, graphic design, illustration, 3D design, product design interior design, architecture, drama, theatre, dance and music).

All submitted abstracts, poster submissions and papers will be double blind peer reviewed by an international panel. Submissions accepted and presented at the conference will be published in the conference proceedings.

500-word abstracts required by 12 January 2007
Full submission can be made through the conference website.
