For the third time the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art presentsone of the most important regional art events  the QuadrilateralBiennale. Its history began in 2005 with a cultural exchange betweenfour neighbouring countries, the members of the Quadrilateralinitiative  Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, and Italy, with an emphasis onpresenting contemporary art practice, its recent developments, excitingstatements, new forms, and media. Unlike its thematic predecessors,Relativism (2005) and Culture Hero (2007), this years QuadrilateralBiennale is for the first time concerned with new media art  the artthat uses digital technologies, which have deeply affected contemporarysociety, as its medium. The Quadrilateral Biennale will examinedifferent angles and intersections emerging from new media in theirrelation to the specific political, economic, and cultural context ofthe participating countries. The curatorial team  Christiane Paul(USA/GER), Nina Czegledy (HU), Peter Toma Dobrila (SL), Darko Fritz(HR), and Elena Giulia Rossi (IT) will present 16 works of media anddigital art, one of the most innovative fields of art in its aestheticand technological constellations. On display in the MMSU and at severalother Rijeka venues, the exhibition will be integrated into the urbanspace of Rijeka, which, during the time of the Biennale, will turn thecity into the regional centre of new media art.

New Year 2010 is coming along with the new edition of TransISTor.


What is TransISTor?

A multidisciplinary training initiative offering European professionals in the audiovisual sector four intensive workshops focused on new technologies in the following key areas:

  1. Preservation techniques and methodologies for digital audiovisual works with respect to latest achievements in the area of reference models and repository technologies.
  2. Integrated approach to 3D cinema and stereoscopy
  3. HDTV retrieval and real-time content distribution in network-driven industrial scenarios
  4. Distributed post-production techniques in the field of visual effects


What does TransISTor offer you?

  • Outstanding training in preservation techniques and methodologies for digital audiovisual works with respect to latest achievements in the area of reference models and repository technologies
  • The best practices in digital production within a newly structured workshop in domain of 3D cinema and stereoscopy
  • Original new workshop focused on HDTV retrieval and real-time content distribution aimed to better understand emerging network-driven industrial scenarios
  • Expanded training module in distributed post-production techniques exploring cutting-edge experiments with real-time work on visual and special effects from multiple remote locations


What previous knowledge do you need?

No special previous knowledge is necessary, but will be a comparative advantage.


Participation fee & scholarships

  • 400 EUR per session for the independent
  • 800 EUR per session for the corporate
  • Scholarships available especially to participants from EU new member states

Participation fee includes: accommodation, subsistence, didactic materials, it does not include travel expenses.
Number of places per session is limited!

Module 1: Preservation techniques and methodologies for digital audiovisual works

Venue: Prague (CZ)
Date: May 47, 2010
Subjects and skills: Latest achievements in the area of reference models and repository technologies for digital audiovisual content
Logic: Digital content is massively produced, and massively forgot. We aim to introduce necessary steps for long-term preservation of the content via indexing, ontological categorizations etc. applying among others also new OAIS standard
Target group: Producers, new media content providers, and trainers
Industrial partners: IBM, INA, BBC, FORTH

Among the lecturers there will be:

  • Daniel Teruggi (research and experimentation director at INA, project coordinator of PrestoPRIME)
  • David Giaretta (associate director of Digital Curation Centre in UK, fundamental contributor to the OAIS Reference Model, project coordinator of CASPAR)
  • Dalit Naor (manager of the Storage Systems group at IBM Haifa Research Laboratory)


Module 2: Integrated approach to 3D cinema and stereoscopy

Venue: Bucharest (RO)
Date: May 1114, 2010
Subjects and skills: Exploring new forms of digital cinema, introducing and mastering 3D stereoscopy technology
Logic: Digital cinema has entered the era of 3D where new concepts and techniques including stereoscopy become essential drivers of innovative productions. The session delivers integrated introduction into state-of-the-art 3D cinema technologies and provides strong hands-on project-oriented professional development experience. Focus on countries with lower audiovisual production.
Target group: Producers, new media content providers, and educators
Industrial partner: Kit Digital, AV Media, AVION, Immersion

Among the lecturers there will be:

  • Viktor Antonov (art director/conceptual artist for Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Lost Coast computer games, designer for the animation feature Renaissance)
  • Tomas Petran (professor of cinema anthropology)
  • Michal Masa (expert in motion tracking devices and interactive 3D projections)
  • Stephane Kyles (expert in virtual environments and computer vision)
  • Pierre Proske (sound in 3D cinema)


Module 3: HDTV retrieval and real-time content distribution in network-driven industrial scenarios

Subjects and skills: Understanding network-driven industrial scenarios, introducing cutting-edge retrieval methods, mastering streaming techniques and technologies
Logic: Digital content is massively distributed over various networks. It is essential to understand how the audiovisual industries make use of networks and what is behind the success of real-time content distribution.
Target group: Producers, new media content providers, post-production experts, educators
Industrial partners: LBI, TZI, Montevideo, Europeana, UPP, SPAFI, Cinepost

Among the lecturers there will be:

  • Felix Nevrela (managing director of post-production company Cinepost)
  • Miroslav Sochor (digital technology expert, DCI Specialist of visual effects and post-production house UPP)
  • Petr Vitek (director of Pro-DIGI, digital cinematography)


Module 4: Distributed post-production techniques in the field of visual effects

Venue: Telc (CZ) Arts & Film festival
Date: June 2427, 2010
Subjects and skills: How to collaboratively post-produce digital content?
Logic: We need to bring attention to distributed processes and working online from remote locations on shared audiovisual content because some of the input and output processing tools are often accessible only at one location.
Target group: Producers, new media content providers, post-production experts, animation professionals, educators
Industrial partners: Cinepost, CESNET, UPP

Among the lecturers there will be:

  • Jan Pinkava (director and co-director of movies Garys Game and Ratattouille at world famous studio PIXAR, currently working on Toy Story 3)
  • Viktor Antonov (art director/conceptual artist for Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Lost Coast computer games, designer for the animation feature Renaissance)


TransISTor is organized by CIANT International Centre for Art and New Technologies (CZ) in association with partners from the audiovisual industry. It is supported by the MEDIA Training programme of the European Union.
