The Q Word: Quantum Art Exhibition

About the Exhibition

The Q Word exhibition took place at the Computer Arts Society, BCS London, on 17 March 2026, bringing together artists, researchers, and quantum technologists to explore how quantum ideas are entering creative practice. Organised by David Upton, with assistance from Geoff Davis and Graham Diprose, the event combined an exhibition with talks and discussion from figures working across computer art, quantum computing, and creative research.

The programme opened with David Upton introducing the exhibition and the relevance of quantum concepts for artists. The keynote was delivered by Professor James Davenport of the University of Bath and the BCS Council, who reviewed the current state of quantum technology. His talk placed quantum computing within the wider field of quantum research, noting major UK investment, the growth of quantum sensing, practical progress in optimisation and simulation, and longer-term implications for cryptography and machine learning.

Further contributions came from Astrid Park, artist and Quantum Application Engineer at Moth Quantum, and Sarah Selby, Lumen Prize-winning artist and researcher at UAL’s Creative Computing Institute. Together, the talks framed quantum technology not simply as a scientific frontier, but as a developing cultural and artistic field. The event concluded with audience questions and discussion.
